Cindy McCain, Wife of Sen. John McCain, Poses for NOH8 Campaign -
Update on John McCain’s Reaction, after the jump.
Cindy McCain, wife of former GOP Presidential Candidate John McCain, has posed for the NOH8 Campaign, the project from photographer Adam Bouska that was started as a response to California passing Prop 8. Subjects, ranging from activists to celebrities to everyday folks, are photographed with duct tape over their mouths to as a sign that their voices aren’t being heard on the subject of marriage equality.
On Cindy McCain’s decision to pose, the NOH8 campaign says the following on its website:
In the year since we’ve started the NOH8 Campaign, we’ve often been surprised at some of the different individuals who have approached us showing their support. Few, though, have surprised us more than Cindy McCain - the wife of Senator John McCain and mother to vocal marriage equality advocate Meghan McCain. The McCains are one of the most well-known Republican families in recent history, and for Mrs. McCain to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot.

Unholy Crusade: More on those Bible Verses on our Military's Guns -
There’s more coming in surrounding the shocking story I blogged about yesterday in which ABC News revealed that our Military is being armed with rifle scopes that have Christian Bible Scripture imprinted on them. These guns are not only being used by our military in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq, but also being used to train the Iraqi and Afghan soldiers that are supposed to be our allies in these Muslim countries.
This has caused huge concerns not only because the Military specifically prohibits the proselytizing of any religion, but also because it could further enflame the idea that the US Military is on a Christian Crusade in Muslim countries.
Now the Marine Corps has announced that it will be meeting with the Michigan-based optics maker, Trijicon Inc, to discuss the verses and the multi-year deal worth up to $660 million, saying:
we are aware of the issue and concerned with how this may be perceived.
You think? Well, it seems Trijicon doesn’t really care because we are a Christian Nation and wishes all you heathens would shut up. Their response after the jump.

Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition... Literally -
According to ABC News, our Military is operating in Muslim countries like Afghanistan and Iraq (and elsewhere in the world) with Bible Scripture imprinted on their guns. Not written on the guns, mind you. Actually embedded as part of the design.
Way to convince other countries we’re not on a “Onward Christian Soldiers” Crusade:
The sights are used by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and in the training of Iraqi and Afghan soldiers. The maker of the sights, Trijicon, has a $660 million multi-year contract to provide up to 800,000 sights to the Marine Corps, and additional contracts to provide sights to the U.S. Army. U.S. military rules specifically prohibit the proselytizing of any religion in Iraq or Afghanistan and were drawn up in order to prevent criticism that the U.S. was embarked on a religious “Crusade” in its war against al Qaeda and Iraqi insurgents.
One of the citations on the gun sights, 2COR4:6, is an apparent reference to Second Corinthians 4:6 of the New Testament, which reads: “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
$660 Million?!? To further enrage and give propaganda to people that are already convinced we are waging a Holy War in their land? Brilliant strategy…

Notre Dame Newspaper Issues Weak "Apology" Over Gay Bashing Cartoon -
In what has to be one of the most weak, pseudo apologies I’ve seen in a long time, the Notre Dame student Newspaper, The Observer, issued an “apology” from the Editorial Staff on Friday for the sickening cartoon it ran that advocated bashing “fruity” gays with a baseball bat.
The piece, called “Responsibility for offensive comic”, starts off okay:
The editors of The Observer would like to publicly apologize for the publication of “The Mobile Party” in the Jan. 13 edition. The burden of responsibility ultimately lies on us for allowing it to go to print.
There is no excuse that can be given and nothing that can be said to reverse the damage that has already been done by this egregious error in judgment.
A good start for publishing a comic that says you should turn “fruits” into “vegetables” by bashing them with a baseball bat. Then the editorial team chooses to leap off the cliff using distractions to deflect blame and not offering any hint of consequences for those involved in the publication of the “bash the fruits” comic.
Much more, including the cartoon, after the jump…

Wow. Apparently Gay Bashing is Funny at Notre Dame -
What a load of anti-LGBT crap.
This gem of a comic strip got the full print treatment in the Notre Dame Student Paper, The Observer:
Character 1: “What’s the easiest way to turn a fruit into a vegetable?”
Character 2: “No idea.”
Character 1: “A baseball bat.”
Get it? Hate crimes bashing fruity LGBT people with a baseball bat are hilarious!
Excuse me while I throw up. Not only did the creator of the comic strip think this was funny, but the newspaper didn’t see an issue with it and saw fit to print it.

Conflicting Signs on DADT Repeal -
There are conflicting opinions coming out of the Military and the Administration on when to move forward on a repeal of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy barring gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military.
Pentagon legal counsel for Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are saying to wait on the repeal at least another year according to the AP:
"Now is not the time," the in-house legal counsel for Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, wrote recently in a memorandum obtained by The Associated Press. "The importance of winning the wars we are in, along with the stress on the force, our body of knowledge and the number of unknowns, demand that we act with deliberation."
Mullen received the conflicting advice this month about whether to move quickly to lift the 1993 ban, and it is not clear what he will recommend to President Barack Obama. Although allowing gays to serve openly in the military was one of Obama’s campaign promises, the issue was put on a back burner during his first year in office. Some liberal supporters and several congressional Democrats are pushing for action.
Pushing back the repeal effort would put it right in the middle of 2012, an election year that might make weak-spined legislators less than enthusiastic about supporting it.

Denise King, Mother of Simmie Williams Jr & LGBT Advocate, Dies -
There is sad news from South Florida. Denise King, the mother of slain 17 year old Simmie Williams Jr and LGBT advocate, died unexpectedly at 10pm New Years Eve.
Since Simmie’s death in 2008, Denise King has balanced her grief with the unsolved murder of her openly LGBT child with her desire to make a difference in equal rights for our community, especially LGBT youth.
My husband and I were blessed with being able to know Denise King- a woman who has turned unspeakable tragedy into a call to action.
She is my hero and an inspiration to all.

The WWJD Hate Crime Inciters are Getting Some Support for their DC "Protest" -
I posted the rather unbelievable story last week that got a lot of you talking about Pastor Gary Cass of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission losing his mind over the passage of the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Cass and his group of hate-mongers had decided to head to DC on November 16th to protest the Hate Crimes Act in front of the Department of Justice in hopes of getting arrested, saying:
We’re basically going to defy the law, and challenge it. We’re going to declare the whole counsel of God, including those parts that some may consider ‘inciting a hate crime’
Of course, we all know that the Hate Crimes Law has nothing to do with speech or religious freedom, but don’t try any of that pesky logic on Cass and his cohorts.
Well, it looks like the putrid party of hate is getting a little bigger now with support from all the usual suspects in the “hate on gays” army…

WWJD? Incite Hate Crimes Against LGBT People, according to this "Pastor" -
The furious explosion of nutjobs over the passage of the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act continues…
Our old fundie friend, Pastor Gary Cass of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission (yeah, that’s clue number one about his point of view), is back at his gay hating ways. But this time he’s taking it to a whole new level. Cass and crew are headed to DC on November 16th to protest the Hate Crimes Act in front of the Department of Justice. Their tactic?
They’ll be calling for violence against LGBT people to try and get arrested so they can “prove” the Hate Crimes Act infringes on their God given right to beat up fags:
The “Rally for Religious Freedom” in front of the Department of Justice in Washington is intended to force Attorney General Eric Holder either to address the issues or be put in a position of ignoring those who say they are violating the provisions of the federal law, Cass said. “We’re basically going to defy the law, and challenge it,” Cass told WND. “We’re going to declare the whole counsel of God, including those parts that some may consider ‘inciting a hate crime’ to see if the attorney general is going to come down and arrest a group of peaceful clergy exercising their First Amendment rights.

Obama Signs Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act and Announces End of HIV Travel Ban -
President Obama announced an end to the HIV Travel and Immigration Ban during the signing ceremony for the vital Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act this afternoon.
The travel ban, a legacy of Jesse Helms, has been in place since 1987. It prevented HIV+ non-U.S. citizens from traveling or immigrating to the United States unless granted a special waiver from the the Department of Homeland Security.
Here’s some of what Obama had to say (Read the full transcript here):
Twenty-two years ago, in a decision rooted in fear rather than fact, the United States instituted a travel ban on entry into the country for people living with HIV/AIDS. Now, we talk about reducing the stigma of this disease — yet we’ve treated a visitor living with it as a threat. We lead the world when it comes to helping stem the AIDS pandemic — yet we are one of only a dozen countries that still bar people from HIV from entering our own country.
If we want to be the global leader in combating HIV/AIDS, we need to act like it. And that’s why, on Monday my administration will publish a final rule that eliminates the travel ban effective just after the New Year. Congress and President Bush began this process last year, and they ought to be commended for it. We are finishing the job. It’s a step that will encourage people to get tested and get treatment, it’s a step that will keep families together, and it’s a step that will save lives.

Obama Signs Matthew Shepard/James Byrd Hate Crimes Bill into Law -
President Obama has just signed the first ever piece of pro-LGBT federal legislation into law.
The Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act was attached to the Defense Authorization Bill and added gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability to existing hate crimes laws.
We have a long way to go, but today is historic. By signing, the President sends a clear message that it is not okay to kill gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard for so many years on this legislation.
Reactions from the orgs - including a joint statement by 30 LGBT orgs - and Judy Shepard after the jump as they come in (check back for updates)…
